WIP #13 Rose Red model sheet

Working on: Model sheet for my original character design of Rose Red

Inspired by: Brothers Grimm fairy tale 'Snow White and Rose Red'

Completed: Line art of second half-length pose

Currently: Applying flat colours

Thoughts:
Way back when, I had a habit of making certain components of a drawing centred or symmetrical. For example, eyes should be centred on the face or neckties should be centred on the chest. I guess it made sense to me at the time, because I like stuff to be neat and precise.

Since then, I've realised the type of character drawings that appeal to me most aren't symmetrical at all. A character will look far more lively and natural if you stop automatically thinking that some things should always be drawn in line with other things.

WIP #12 Rose Red model sheet

Working on: Model sheet for my original character design of Rose Red

Inspired by: Brothers Grimm fairy tale 'Snow White and Rose Red'

Completed: Draft of second half-length pose

Currently: Clean up - drawing line art

Thoughts:
When I decided to take my anime art seriously, I was desperate to nail down some revolutionary drawing style that was mine alone. I shouldn't have been so obsessed with originality (I ended up turning out some pretty weird-looking, bug-eyed stuff...).

You begin by admiring different drawing styles and then you adapt and hone your own style overtime by emulating works you like the most. Even when you think you've established your style, your artistic skill doesn't stop growing and you never know what will influence the final look of your next piece.

I've written about this before and I'm writing about it again, because as I'm sketching Rose Red, I'm constantly referencing the artwork of my favourite anime artists. I spent a while testing different face shapes for Rose Red (rounded, angular, long, small?) and then what kind of smile Rose Red should have (wide, small, triangular, curled?).

I find myself thinking about the most recent anime and manga I've watched and read, too (Sword Art Online and Horimiya), so I get the feeling my art's being influenced by them as well. A small part of me's concerned that my portfolio will come across as inconsistent, but I'm happy to go with the flow.

WIP #11 Rose Red model sheet

Working on: Model sheet for my original character design of Rose Red

Inspired by: Brothers Grimm fairy tale 'Snow White and Rose Red'

Completed: Full length pose and first half-length pose

Currently: Drafting second half-length pose

Thoughts: It took me a stupidly long time to finalise such a standard pose... Definitely having an off-day. For some reason my brain can't remember how to draw a female body ;¬ ¬

WIP #10 Rose Red model sheet

Working on: Model sheet for my original character design of Rose Red

Inspired by: Brothers Grimm fairy tale 'Snow White and Rose Red'

Completed: Flat colours

Currently: Shading

Thoughts:
It is SO gloomy outside. My eyes are pretty tired (and bloodshot) and the only bottle of eyedrops we have in the house expired nine months ago x_x

Otherwise, I'm satisfied with Rose Red's facial expression.

WIP #9 Rose Red model sheet

Working on: Model sheet for my original character design of Rose Red

Inspired by: Brothers Grimm fairy tale 'Snow White and Rose Red'

Completed: Line art

Currently: Applying flat colours

Thoughts:
Mirroring is so easy to do in Xara Xtreme. It's tempting to clone and flip lines when you're drawing a character from the front view (to make nearly everything symmetrical), and I used to do that a lot, but now I want to break away from that habit. I really want to get my characters looking as natural and expressive as possible!

WIP #8 Rose Red model sheet

Working on: Model sheet for my original character design of Rose Red

Inspired by: Brothers Grimm fairy tale 'Snow White and Rose Red'

Completed: Rough draft

Currently: Drawing line art

Thoughts:
I always draw and colour the eyes first before moving on to the rest of the line art. It gives me a much better idea of how the finished drawing will look (I find leaving the eyes uncoloured distracting... because it makes everything look spooky to me... ^^; ).

There are so many different ways to stylise and colour anime eyes, I can't seem to make up my mind how I'd like to do it.

WIP #7 Rose Red model sheet

Working on: Model sheet for my original character design of Rose Red

Inspired by: Brothers Grimm fairy tale 'Snow White and Rose Red'

Completed: Full length pose

Currently: Drafting first half-length facial expression

Thoughts:
In the original fairy tale, Rose Red is the sister with the livelier personality, so I imagine my Rose Red would be headstrong enough to take big risks and explore new ideas, even if they do land her in trouble sometimes...

I'm going to draw the awkward, guilty smile she pulls when her plans go awry. Not wholly convinced with the expression yet, so I'll be spending time tweaking it.

WIP #6 Rose Red model sheet

Working on: Model sheet for my original character design of Rose Red

Inspired by: Brothers Grimm fairy tale 'Snow White and Rose Red'

Completed: Shading

Currently: Applying highlights

Thoughts:
I stupidly saved the older drawing file over the new drawing file, so had to redo an entire day's work... x_x

I forced myself to think positively about it. Shading is something I tend to find references for, so I turned this into a chance to test myself. I re-shaded everything without references & challenged myself to improve on whatever I did before. In the end, I'm happier with the results this time round ^-^

WIP #5 Rose Red model sheet

Working on: Model sheet for my original character design of Rose Red

Inspired by: Brothers Grimm fairy tale 'Snow White and Rose Red'

Completed: Flat colours

Currently: Shading

Thoughts: I'm glad I gave Rose Red an adventurous colour scheme. I want her to come across as a vibrant character. The original fairy tale does see her move into a castle as a princess though... Makes me wonder how she'll deal with that kind of lifestyle...

WIP #4 Rose Red model sheet

Working on: Model sheet for my original character design of Rose Red

Inspired by: Brothers Grimm fairy tale 'Snow White and Rose Red'

Completed: Line art

Currently: Applying flat colours

Thoughts:
Finally got round to cleaning up the whole draft!

I'm flitting between a bunch of creative projects. I’ve found that scheduling such things into a timetable takes away the fun, so I’m letting my ever-changing mood decide what project I'd like to resume each day... That's one reason why it's taking so long to draw Rose Red ^^;

A few months back, I learned how to use Aegisub so I could subtitle HoneyWorks music videos. Watching fluffy HoneyWorks content is one of my ways of de-stressing, but I’m not satisfied with existing fansubs (I’m picky like that)… As a pretentious writer, I’m unhappy with some diction, and as a fussy artist, I’m unhappy with some stylisation, so wanted to redo everything just for me and only me (because I don’t speak Japanese, I work from existing English translations and online translators, so can’t upload what I’ve done). Subbing has become a little past time I really enjoy, because I get to flex my creative writing muscles :3

I took up crochet for the first time on Tuesday. I can’t remember the last time I learned a new skill and am pleased I was able to get to grips with it quickly (after several hours of exclaiming, "Why doesn't mine look like that?!"). It was a bit of a risk, because I bought the materials with the intention of self-teaching myself via YouTube videos, an old crochet book (How to Crochet by Pauline Turner) and a wonderful blog called All About Ami Crochet. Right now everything seems to be going to plan, but I trip up over the many numbers of stitches I do and freak out whenever I lose count… It sucks cuz I envisioned myself knitting to music. I’m also shocked at how quickly my hands and fingers started to ache!

Besides drawing, subbing and crocheting, I’ve been writing a lot of fiction. Life’s pretty stressful, but I guess I should be thankful to have so many ways of escaping and blowing off steam ^-^

WIP #3 Rose Red model sheet

Working on: Model sheet for my original character design of Rose Red

Inspired by: Brothers Grimm fairy tale 'Snow White and Rose Red'

Completed: Rough draft

Currently: Cleaning up

Thoughts:
Been so busy as of late, I haven't had much time to finish the line art. Working in vector can be a long process, because it forces me to pay attention to every small detail. Feeling the urge to try drawing freehand in Photoshop again, for some reason... even though I've already tried many times & failed miserably ^^;

WIP #2 Rose Red model sheet

Working on: Model sheet for my original character design of Rose Red

Inspired by: Brothers Grimm fairy tale 'Snow White and Rose Red'

Completed: Rough draft

Currently: Cleaning up

Thoughts:
Though I was motivated to draw again, I was worried I'd end up struggling with my first sketches. All creatives have bad days - days when every single line you draw just looks WRONG. I'm really happy to find that I needn't have worried! Looking forward to applying the line art.

WIP #1 Rose Red model sheet

Working on: Model sheet for my original character design of Rose Red

Inspired by: Brothers Grimm fairy tale 'Snow White and Rose Red'

Completed: Skeletal base

Currently: Assuring myself I still know how to draw

Thoughts:
I'm drawing again! It does feel strange using my tablet after having left it alone for 5 months, but I finally feel motivated enough to commit to new artwork.

I started working full time at the family business & it took a long time for me to adjust to that. The past few months have been very stressful, so I took an extended break from art & social media, turning instead to storywriting. It may take a while for me to make regular online updates again, but for now, I'm doing whatever I feel like ^-^

WIP #7 "Dark Nightingale" zeitgeist

Working on: Original anime character design of a zeitgeist (my original Fairyland species). To be put up for auction as an adoptable!

Inspired by: Nightingale bird with Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale 'The Tallow Candle'.

Completed: Flat colours

Currently: Applying shading

Thoughts: Finalising the colour scheme didn't take long, but my clicking finger's still a little numb, so I'm working more slowly than usual.

WIP #6 "Dark Nightingale" zeitgeist

Working on: Original anime character design of a zeitgeist (my original Fairyland species). To be put up for auction as an adoptable!

Inspired by: Nightingale bird with Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale 'The Tallow Candle'.

Completed: Greyscale flats

Currently: Experimenting with colour scheme

Thoughts: Working on the finer details of this character design made my clicking finger numb x_x I've been trying to give it a break by using my left hand or clicking with my middle finger... Hate it when this happens.

WIP #5 "Dark Nightingale" zeitgeist

Working on: Original anime character design of a zeitgeist (my original Fairyland species). To be put up for auction as an adoptable!

Inspired by: Nightingale bird with Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale 'The Tallow Candle'.

Completed: Line art

Currently: Applying greyscale flats

Thoughts: I've decided against a veiled headdress; Dark Nightingale's long hair would look far more dramatic without one.

WIP #4 "Dark Nightingale" zeitgeist

Working on: Original anime character design of a zeitgeist (my original Fairyland species). To be put up for auction as an adoptable!

Inspired by: Nightingale bird with Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale 'The Tallow Candle'.

Currently: Cleaning up rough draft

Thoughts: I've always loved the look of pretty lace on clothing designs, but it takes so much patience to draw... I actually started out by copying and pasting, but because I want some movement in the dress, I'm making myself redraw the lace pattern every time...

WIP #3 "Dark Nightingale" zeitgeist

Working on: Original anime character design of a zeitgeist (my original Fairyland species). To be put up for auction as an adoptable!

Inspired by: Nightingale bird with Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale 'The Tallow Candle'.

Currently: Cleaning up rough draft and fine-tuning design

Thoughts: I've modified the dress design a lot since my last WIP screenshot. Sometimes it's hard to tell in a rough sketch if elements are working, so I'm making decisions as I tidy up the drawing. The long hair I chose is decidedly challenging... I'm not sure yet if I'd still like Dark Nightingale to have a veiled headdress...

WIP #2 "Dark Nightingale" zeitgeist

Working on: Original anime character design of a zeitgeist (my original Fairyland species). To be put up for auction as an adoptable!

Inspired by: Nightingale bird with Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale 'The Tallow Candle'.

Currently: Finalising design

Thoughts: I've pretty much regurgitated what I drafted on paper, but the process didn't bring out the Dark Nightingale's personality... ;¬_¬ Need to spend some time fine-tuning the design until I'm satisfied.

WIP #5 "Light Nightingale" zeitgeist

Working on: Original anime character design of a zeitgeist (my original Fairyland species). To be put up for auction as an adoptable!

Inspired by: Blue-throat nightingale bird with Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale 'The Tallow Candle'.

Completed: Flat colours

Currently: Applying shading

Thoughts: I don't know why, but right up until I finished the line art for this piece, I thought it was acceptable to depict tassels in the form of stringy lines (exactly as seen in my previous screenshots)... I've fixed that now...

WIP #4 "Light Nightingale" zeitgeist

Working on: Original anime character design of a zeitgeist (my original Fairyland species). To be put up for auction as an adoptable!

Inspired by: Blue-throat nightingale bird with Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale 'The Tallow Candle'.

Completed: Line art and back view

Currently: Applying flat colours

Thoughts: Some design elements still weren't sitting well with me after I finished the line art, so I spent some time revising the look of the drawstring bag, necktie and skirt (changing the latter to bell-bottoms).

WIP #3 "Light Nightingale" zeitgeist

Working on: Original anime character design of a zeitgeist (my original Fairyland species). To be put up for auction as an adoptable!

Inspired by: Blue-throat nightingale bird with Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale 'The Tallow Candle'.

Currently: Finalising skirt design and line art

Thoughts: I'm not wholly convinced by the skirt design I initially came up with, so browsing around for new inspiration.

WIP #2 "Light Nightingale" zeitgeist

Working on: Original anime character design of a zeitgeist (my original Fairyland species). To be put up for auction as an adoptable!

Inspired by: Blue-throat nightingale bird with Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale 'The Tallow Candle'.

Completed: Design stage

Currently: Cleaning up rough draft for front view

Thoughts: I'm going easier on myself by only drawing one front view and one back view for my adoptable character designs. The views will be at a slight angle, so I'm hoping they'd provide sufficient reference and that profile views won't be necessary.

WIP #3 Snow White model sheet

Working on: Model sheet for my original character design of Snow White

Inspired by: Brothers Grimm fairy tale 'Snow White and Rose Red'

Completed: Flat colours

Currently: Shading

Thoughts: Work is moving more quickly now that Snow White's hair is done (the curls I've given her need a lot of attention...). As for my music playlist, I've managed to make it sound new by adding a bunch of old songs I'd forgotten about :3 I never knew how much I missed DBSK's 'Forever Love' or 'Love in the Ice'!

WIP #2 Snow White model sheet

Working on: Model sheet for my original character design of Snow White

Inspired by: Brothers Grimm fairy tale 'Snow White and Rose Red'

Completed: Line art of three poses

Currently: Applying flat colours

Thoughts: I was planning to draw one full-length pose and two half-length poses, but for some reason I couldn't resist turning one of the half lengths into full length... ^^; Also I need more songs in my playlist to draw to... Most of the ones already there have gone stagnant... x_x

WIP #1 Snow White model sheet

Working on: Model sheet for my original character design of Snow White

Inspired by: Brothers Grimm fairy tale 'Snow White and Rose Red'

Completed: Rough draft

Currently: Drawing line art

Thoughts:
I've taken a very long break from my Fairy Bat Tales blog and would very much like to explore and write about classic fairy tales again. It was difficult to keep up with the schedule I'd given myself, but I've now (hopefully) thought of a work routine that will be easier to manage.

Instead of creating five artworks for each fairy tale I look at (yes, I made myself do that, but at least I got in lots of drawing practice...) I'll see how three will go. I'm planning for these to be an adoptable zeitgeist character design, a model sheet for an original fairy tale character design and finally a simple fairy bat drawing.

To test the waters, I'm going to draw model sheets for fairy tale characters I've already designed. It's an interesting process, because I'm really challenging myself to pay attention to detail and improve my overall drawing style. Perhaps I'm too determined to achieve "perfection", but I guess it's better than not caring ^^;
